Two Tactical Decisions That Worked For Eguavoen Against Egypt
By on January 12th, 2022. Sports
It’s not news that the Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations campaign in far away Cameroon with a slim but convincing victory against Pharaohs of Egypt, with the first half goal scored by Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho at the Roumdé-Adjia Stadium in Garoua.

The Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen caused mixed reactions amongst football fans and lovers when he left two important players on the bench, players who some felt should have started one of the most decisive games especially against Egypt. Interestingly it worked out as they won the game.

One of the two tactical decisions he took was to bench Alex Iwobi and Ahmed Musa, as the Everton winger was introduced in the last minute, while the Fatih Karagümrük forward wasn’t introduced at all, a decision that really paid off, as the preferred players all did a yeoman’s job to silent the Pharaohs of Egypt as they hardly penetrate the super Eagles defence team.

The second tactical decision he took was that Eguavoen played to the players strength and set up well as the players responded and this really turned out well, As he showed no form bias and sentiments in his starting like up. The win against Egypt really showed that Eguavoen did something different.
